Breast Reduction Procedures
Most often people associate breast surgery with procedures that enlarge the breast. But, breast reduction surgery is also a common procedure called reduction mammaplasty. This surgery helps women achieve a more natural breast size by eliminating any excess breast fat, removing glandular tissue, and tightening up the skin in the breast area.
Reasons for Breast Reduction Surgery
Women with breasts that are very large in relation to their body frame and size can suffer from many issues such as back and shoulder pain, neck pain and breathing problems. Overly large breasts can also lead to limiting certain physical activities. The unwanted attention paid to the breasts can also be disconcerting and annoying to the woman, as well as cause psychological problems and self-esteem issues.Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is usually not performed for cosmetic reasons. Making the breasts smaller resolves medical issues that can become chronic if not addressed. The surgery is performed by making an incision around the areola, and then incisions are made below and to the sides of the areola. This allows fatty breast tissue and excess skin to be removed. Next, the size of the areola is reduced and the nipple is repositioned higher on the breast. All of this can be done without the functional breast tissue below the areola being affected. The lower breast skin is then sutured closed below the areola which will give the reduced breast new contours.
There will be dressings and bandages placed on and around the breast area after the reduction surgery. Bruising and swelling will occur, and an elastic bandage and support bra will be required to minimize the swelling and assist the healing process of the breasts. If necessary, thin tubes that drain away excess blood or fluids may be inserted temporarily.
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, is performed on an outpatient basis. It is recommended that the patient has someone to remain with them for the night after the surgery to ensure that no complications arise.
Who Should Have Breast Reduction Surgery
The surgery is not recommended for women under age 20, as the breasts have not fully developed until then. Women who plan on breast feeding babies should also not have breast reduction surgery. But, for women who are suffering pain from the weight of the heavy breasts, or who feel extremely self-conscious about their breasts, the surgery will give them renewed confidence in how they look and feel.
