Breast Revision
A problem associated with breast augmentation surgery is that the breasts are not going to remain the same throughout the patient's life. Over time breasts' changes will occur such as after child birth, weight loss, or simply natural changes in the body. Some women may come to the conclusion that they are simply not happy with their breasts anymore, and may desire larger or smaller breasts. Whatever the reason, women who are unhappy with their breasts may want to consider a breast revision.
Besides natural changes that life brings forth, it's possible that the original implant may have changed. Changes in the implant can include deflation, scar tissue tightening around the implant, or the implant may have shifted. If a person believes she may be noticing these changes, a breast revision may be the solution.
If a breast revision sounds beneficial, one should schedule an appointment with a breast revision surgeon to discuss the possibilities. There are several options being offered for breast revisions including breast augmentation, a breast lift, or a breast reduction. A patient will discuss these options with the surgeon and if it is right for her, a breast revision will be scheduled.
Surgeons may recommend taking medication and/or adjusting medication currently being taken prior to the surgery. In order to minimize bleeding after surgery, patients will be asked to avoid Aspirin, anti-inflammatory medication and/or herbal supplements after the surgery. It is important that patients who smoke quit smoking well before the surgery.
On the day of the surgery, it will be important for the patient to line someone up to take them home, and stay with them the first night, in order to help monitor recovery.
Most of the breast revision procedures carry approximately the same recovery time. Patients are asked to plan for a 24-48 hour post-operation recovery and at least seven days of reduced activity. Swelling and soreness will occur after the procedure, which should subside in a few weeks. Dressing and bandages will be applied to the incision area and a temporary drainage tube may be placed in the breast to take away any excess fluids. Patients will receive instruction on how to care for their breasts, as well as any medications they should take. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience unusual heartbeats, chest pains, or shortness of breath.
