Choosing Between Silicone and Saline Breast Implants
Plastic surgeons often say they preform breast enlargement surgeries more often than any other surgery. There are two different types of breast implants available to be placed inside the breast and these are silicone and saline implants. Choosing between these two different implants can be difficult for some women, while others go into the surgery knowing which ones they will be getting from the start. One of the hardest decisions for women to make in most cases is whether or not to get breast augmentation surgery in the first place.
Who Should Get Implants?
While there is no way to easily answer this deeply personal question, the simple answer is anyone who wants them. Women get breast implants done for many different reasons other than to have larger breast. Here are several different reasons women choose to have breast implant surgery performed:
- Reconstructive Surgery After Cancer
- Leveling Out Breast Size
- Gaining A Larger Bust
- Breast Lift
Some of the above reasons are widely known such as getting a larger bust, and reconstructive surgery. However, not a lot of people realize that women going in for breast lifts sometimes get very small implants placed to help give their breasts fullness they may of lost due to pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Breasts are generally not the same size on any women, and for some of us they can range drastically in size. With an A cup on the right, while having a full C cup on the other can lead to feeling self-conscious and embarrassed. Every woman has her own personal reasons for getting breast implants, and these should remain so. No one should convince a woman to not get, or to get this surgery done.
Silicone Gel Breast Implant
Silicone gel is thought to feel the most like natural breast tissue. They have a soft texture, and are very smooth under the skin and are not prone to wrinkling or rippling. Silicone breast implants have just recently made a comeback for use in breast enlargement surgery, as the FDA banned the use of them from 1992-2005.
Women who have received silicone gel implants must have an MRI done every few years to check and make sure that their implants have not ruptured. These breast implants have a high chance of what is called a silent rupture, which often goes unnoticed. Having MRIs done will help the doctor determine if the implants need to be removed immediately.
Saline Breast Implant
When silicone gel implants were no longer offered, saline implants were the only option left for women who wanted their breasts augmented. These implants are offered alongside silicone implants and are often placed under the breast muscle because they have a water balloon feel.
Doctors have worked around this problem by slightly overfilling these implants and placing them under the muscle for a more natural feel. Rippling and wrinkling of the outer shell also leads to placement under the muscle as well. Whereas silicone breast implants tend to have silent ruptures with slow leaks that often go unnoticed, these implants will often make breasts look deflated and even oddly shaped.
Choosing Between the Two
Breast augmentation surgery is a personal choice between a woman and her surgeon, and picking out the proper implant is the same. Often women who are recovering from breast cancer and need reconstructive surgery will get silicone implants. The softer texture allows for them to be placed right under the skin, instead of under the muscle.
Smaller breasted women will often opt for the silicone breast implant as well since they don’t have a lot of breast tissue. Silicone implants must often have larger incision sites due to the fact that they come prefilled with gel. This means the scarring can be larger, but in recent years there have been surgical advances that allow doctors to minimize scarring. However, some women still do not like the negative stigma associated with the silicone breast implant and still prefer the saline breast implant.
Saline implants are filled once they are placed inside the breast. The surgeon only makes a tiny incision and then places the empty silicone shell inside the breast, generally under the breast muscle. Once the implant is placed inside, it is then filled with the desired amount of saline solution.
Silicone breast implants do have an additional age restriction placed on them for women who want them for simple breast augmentation surgery. Saline implants can be placed when you are 18, but you must be age 22 and over to have silicone implants unless you are having reconstructive surgery done. Choosing a plastic surgeon should be your next step. User reviews of clinics, and websites should be helpful, along with any before and after pictures of past surgeries. Always remember to check for proper licensure and plastic surgery accreditation before going under the knife.
