MastoPexy (Breast Lift)
A breast lift is called a Mastopexy. It is surgery that lifts and reshapes the breast, rather than changing the size of the breast. Sometimes a breast lift is also performed on women who are having breast enlargement surgery. It is a relatively common surgery, and can restore a more youthful appearance and confidence in women.
Why Get a Breast Lift
Ageing and gravity will take its toll on the elasticity of the skin of the breast leading to sagging as the breasts lose their firmness and shape. There are other factors that can lead to breasts sagging such as pregnancy or breast feeding. Breast lifts will give the breast a better contour and appearance by lifting and raising them. A woman whose breasts are a nice size but pendulous would get good results from breast lift surgery. So would women whose breasts have lost their firmness or substance or who areola areas points downwards instead of outwards. Breasts that point downwards are sometimes an inherited trait, so they may be firm but the breast lift can reposition the nipple area for a more natural look. Most women have breasts that are different size and shape, but if the difference is very noticeable the breast lift will reshape the breasts to a more uniform look.
Effects of a Breast Lift
After having a breast life procedure done the total effect will not be noticeable for several months. After the surgery a support bra or elastic bandage is required so that the breasts are supported as they heal. There will be some swelling and a temporary drainage tube may be required to get rid of excess fluids or blood. This is a normal procedure. The surgery is performed with three incisions, one around the areola, one that runs from the bottom of the areola to under the breast, and one that follows the curve of the breast crease. Excess skin is removed to eliminate the sagging, and the nipple area is moved to a higher position on the breast. Skin from the area at the top of the areola is brought down to reshape the breast. The area is dressed and bandaged as it heals. If breast cancer runs in the woman's family, having the surgery will not increase the risk of getting breast cancer, but the surgeon will probably want to perform a mammogram before the surgery. The results of the breast lift will give a woman youthful looking breasts that will remain firm and supported.
