Penile Implants: One Solution for Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction ranks among the most common sexual problems in men, and one of the leading causes of low esteem and huge negative impact on most relationships - especially if the partners are intimate. The first-line therapy for erectile dysfunction comprises lifestyle changes and modification of the drugs that accelerate this condition.
In the recent years though, other alternative therapeutic options have found use in managing erectile dysfunction, the major one being penile implants.
What is a penile implant?
A penile implant (prosthesis) is a treatment option for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. When natural ED treatment attempts prove futile, surgery to implant a penile prosthesis can be the answer.
Penile implantation also occurs in the case of penis reconstruction following extreme scarring damage because of over-curvature or Peyronie’s disease.
Experts in penile implant surgery perform prosthesis surgeries, with the operation lasting about an hour. Six weeks after the surgery, the patient can resume sexual intercourse.
Types of penile implants
Penile implants are available in either inflatable or non-inflatable (malleable) types, with each having its share of strengths and weaknesses.
Inflatable Penile Implant
Today, most men prefer inflatable implants to the non-inflatable. Inflatable penile implants are easier to hide and allow men to have an erection at any time of their liking. These implants are available as either 2-piece or 3-piece implants.
- 2-piece Inflatable Penile Implants - The 2-piece inflatable penile implant comprises two main components: the cylinders, which become engorged with saline to cause an erection, and the combined reservoir as well as pump unit. The major disadvantage of this type of implant is that the penis does not become as rigid as a 3-piece penile implant when erect. Certain cylinders of this kind of implant may also alter the penis’ natural shape.
- 3-piece Inflatable Penile Implants - Also called the multi-component implant, this type of implant is easier to inflate. It is also the only implant that gives a normal appearance whether the penis is flaccid or erect, hence the most comfortable and satisfying for the patient. The 3-piece implant consists of three cylinders, a separated reservoir and a pump. Patients with this type of prosthesis recover more quickly than those with other types of prosthesis because the 3-piece one allows the penis to become flaccid.
Non-Inflatable (Malleable) Penile Implant
Also known as the semi-rigid penile prosthesis, it is the simplest type of implant. This kind of prosthesis consists of rods that are surgically placed in the penis’ erection chamber. Malleable implants are the implants of choice for men with arthritis, spine injuries and those with limited hand dexterity. Non-inflatable penile implants are simple and less expensive than other implants.
One major downside of a non-inflatable penile implant is that the postoperative pain can be quite severe and can cause discomfort as the body adjusts to having constant erections. An abnormal appearance of the penis is also a notable disadvantage with this type of implant.
Penile Implantation Safety and Expectations after Surgery
A penile prosthesis surgery is, so far, one of the most reliable and the least invasive surgical operation accessible. However, just as is the case in other surgical operations, complications such as infections, mechanical failure and uncontrolled bleeding may arise, calling for re-operation or removal of the device. With an expert carrying out the procedure, such complications are less likely to happen.
Choosing the right penile implant can be a difficult decision, and therefore it is important to first consult your urologist before going for surgery. Other factors such as your age, the age of your partner, the size of your scrotum and your natural penis, your medical history and previous surgeries among others, are some of the key factors that you need to discuss with your doctor before having a penile implant.
A penile implant is usually meant to mimic a natural erection and having intercourse with a prosthesis should feel no different. In fact, a successful prosthesis is nearly 100% effective in providing sexual satisfaction. The implant does not affect ejaculation - men should still reach orgasm and can still feel the skin sensations.
